"Great Ideas" Challenges Critical Thinking Skills of BGSU Students

The Great Ideas and Desserts events, originally stemming from HONORS 2020: Critical Thinking about Great Ideas curriculum, are opportunities for students to develop critical thinking skills, sharpen communication skills, and forge connections across curricular and co-curricular experiences. During the events, faculty and staff members facilitate conversations on a wide-variety of topics, including: current events, social issues, and specific readings.

Students have the opportunity to choose from available topics and are asked to prepare for the discussion by reviewing materials (articles and videos) suggested by the facilitators.

This experience is vital for the success of our future critical thinkers who will one day shape and change our community, state, and world.

We are raising funds to ensure that every first-year Honors student can participate in this enriching event. With your help, we can establish a spot for every student at the Great Ideas and Desserts table so they can share their ideas, passions, and experiences to become the leaders and critical thinkers of tomorrow.

Shaping the Student Experience Outside of the Classroom

With your help, we are able to help prepare students to: ·

  • Understand, analyze and evaluate the themes and issues of selected texts and topics in the context of their values, opinions, and beliefs.         ·
  • Identify the author’s biases and assumptions made in arguments in texts and topics discussed. ·
  • Recognize and communicate connections between themes and outside experiences in the engagement with faculty facilitators and peers.

These essential lessons, found in the Great Ideas and Desserts event, allow students to learn outside the classroom in an engaging and challenging environment. The Great Ideas and Desserts event will also give students the chance to invest in their ability to learn, inquire, and network with members of the Honors College at BGSU as well as the wider BGSU Community. Students graduating from the Honors College are graduating with a set of skills that will shape their character to become fruitful professionals in the community and in the world.

With your help and generous donation, you are giving our students an opportunity to speak up, be heard, and develop an interest in lifelong learning -- an opportunity the Honors College at BGSU strives to provide for every student.

Thank you for helping shape the next generation of critical thinkers.
